The Christmas season is a great time to get together and enjoy the company of loved ones. The Christmas meal forms a very special part of the day for many families. Sitting down to a meal together gives you a chance to relax over some fantastic food and drink. Whether you are planning to have family over for Christmas, Boxing Day or another special meal, you might be thinking about Christmas table decoration ideas.
These Christmas table decoration ideas will inspire you to create a pretty setting for your special meal. Combine these with decorations for the rest of your home and you’ll create a welcoming, festive atmosphere your guests are sure to love.
1) COLOUR SCHEME
Picking a colour scheme is a good place to start. Once you’ve thought about this you can start looking for pieces to pull together the look of your dining table. If you fancy trying something less traditional, pastel colours are popular at the moment and make a great change.
2) TABLE RUNNER
If you are not keen on using a tablecloth or you have a beautiful table, a table runner is great. Make sure you measure your table first so that you don’t get something that is too long or too short. To make it look extra special, drape a length of garland over the top of it down the table’s centre. This creates a nice bit of texture. If you have any festive-themed material, hem it with a Magic Stitch to create a bespoke table runner.
3) PLACE SETTINGS
Opt for mats that work well with the size of your plates and don’t overcrowd your table. A contrasting colour to your table runner can work well. Alternatively, opt for all your table linen in one colour then add details in a contrasting colour. This will help pull all your Christmas table decoration ideas together.
4) SERVIETTES
If you have never tried creating cleverly folded serviettes to set off your table before then don’t worry. There are plenty of simple, easy to follow tutorials out there that will really help you. If folding really isn’t your thing then why not consider some nice contrasting ribbons to tie around your serviettes. Metal serviette rings are also a great choice, and you could tuck a frond of pine into them to create a festive twist.
5) PLACE CARDS
If you have lots of guests, then you will want to make it easy for everyone to find their place at the table and there are plenty of fun ways in which you can display place cards. Mini candy canes make great place card holders, alternatively why not tie each place card to a bauble to add a bit of sparkle to your table.
6) CENTRE PIECES
Some people like to make a special feature for the centre of their table, whilst flowers make a great choice, they can be a little safe. Tiny Christmas trees complete with miniature baubles can make a lovely seasonal alternative for the centre of your table and can be decorated to fit in with any colour scheme.
7) CANDLES
If you prefer something a little more minimalist, then a clever arrangement of candles is sure to give your table the perfect touch. For something a little different why not fill a large glass bowl with fruit and nuts and place a pillar candle in a cylinder vase in the centre for an easy festive decoration.
8) BOWLS AS CENTRE PIECES
If you don’t want any type of floral or foliage decoration on your table, and many people prefer not to due to allergies, then there are alternatives that can really offer the wow factor. A large ceramic bowl, or even a cake stand, can make an unusual base for a display of bright baubles, if you can find vintage style baubles then even better.
9) FLOWERS
Christmas lends itself very well to floral or foliage-based decoration. For a more traditional look opt for a beautiful vase of flowers for the centre of the table or small bud vases by every place setting. Bring nature to your table with a cleverly placed display of pine fronds, holly, and pinecones to create an alternative floral look.
10) WREATH CHANDELIER
Remember Christmas table decoration ideas do not have to be limited to the things that you put on your table. If you want to create a more festive look above your table but don’t have a light fixture there, then why not create a wreath chandelier of your own using ribbons to suspend it from the ceiling.
11) WRAP YOUR CUTLERY
If you want to give your cutlery a special touch, then why not make clever little napkin and cutlery bundles for each guest. You can choose any design you like a whip it up quickly with a Magic Stitch Deluxe. Lay the cutlery on top of a napkin, placed on a plate, and then wrap each place setting in a decorative ribbon, simple, elegant, and very effective.
12) CUTLERY HOLDERS
Mini Santa hats make great cutlery holders and are a very fun festive touch for any table. Alternatively, some gold or tartan ribbon, mini Santa hats or mini stockings also make super pretty, festive cutlery holders.
If you have some Christmassy serviettes on hand, you could fold them into cutlery holders – it’s really easy!
13) WOODEN MATS
If you like a Christmas table with all the food in serving dishes in the middle of the table, then having mats that will stand up to these hot dishes is a must. Thin slices of tree trunk, usually available from good craft stores, make great mats and can really compliment your festive table.
Remember, Christmas table decoration ideas are limited only by your imagination. Whether you are looking for something more traditional or fancy creating a quirky fun festive table this holiday season there are plenty of ideas to help you get started.
