How to Do Your Eyebrows: Guide and Tips

Eyebrows that are overgrown, overplucked, or of the wrong colour can become a focal point for all the wrong reasons. If you don’t want to end up with brows you dislike, but don’t want to spend heaps of cash at a beauty parlour either, you should learn how to do your eyebrows like a pro at home. Don’t worry it is quite easy. Just follow the guidelines and tips below.

EYEBROW MAPPING FOR OPTIMUM SHAPING

The wrong brow shape can make you look awkward no matter how perfectly groomed your eyebrows are. You should start with mapping your brows to find out how long they should be and where the arch must go. All you need is a brow pencil.

  1. Place the eyebrow pencil at the top of your nostril, ensuring it is in a vertical line, up from the inner corner of your eye. Use the pencil to mark the spot as this is where your eyebrows should start.
  2. Now, looking straight ahead, keeping the tip of the pencil at the top of the nostril, pivot the pencil picturing an imaginary line through the centre of the eye and pupil. This is where your brow’s arch should begin. Mark the spot!
  3. Pivot the pencil again and align it with the outer corner of your eye. Marking where it meets the brow line – this is where your brows should finish.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EYEBROW SHAPE FOR YOU

Once you have mapped out your eyebrows, it’s time to choose the correct shape. Here’s how to pick a brow shape based on your face shape:

  • Round: Shape your brows with a high arch
  • Long: Straight and elongated brows
  • Square: A soft arch with an overall undefined finish
  • Rectangle: Soft and slightly more curved arch
  • Triangle: Low and curved arches
  • Heart: Rounded arch and straighter brows
  • Diamond: Rounded arches
  • Oval: A slight arch and straight brow shape

PREPPING THE SKIN FOR HAIR REMOVAL AND SHAPING

Doing your brows isn’t overly complicated, but prepping your skin can make a difference in terms of outcome – it is like following a skincare routine.

  • Clean the area: After you’ve exfoliated the area, cleanse your brow area.  Doing so will remove traces of sebum and soothe the skin, preventing irritation.
  • Exfoliate: The first thing to do if you want to end up with beautiful brows is to exfoliate your skin. Removing dead skin cells can give you better access to the hair you need to remove. The result will be smoother skin and better-looking brows. Use a gentle exfoliator on the area above the brows, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Map the brows: Follow the advice above to mark the spots where your brows should start and end and where the arch should go. You’ll need these lines to do your eyebrows correctly and achieve the perfect shape. Don’t use any brow stencils because you’ll end up with an unnatural look, unsuited to your face shape.

SHAPING AND GROOMING YOUR BROWS

For ages, women did their eyebrows with tweezers. Then, waxing came along. The former is a long and painful procedure. The latter is quicker but can be more painful.

Luckily, you can now do your eyebrows with a shaver to achieve the perfect look effortlessly and without any pain. A fine example of a brow shaver is the Finishing Touch Flawless Brows. The precision tip and built-in light allow you to follow the marks you’ve made earlier and shape your brows to perfection. Just use small circular motions to remove any stray hairs. It’s really that easy!

If you like extra precision and don’t mind them, use tweezers with a built-in light to pluck out shorter hairs that the shaver couldn’t pick and create a sharper, more defined brow line.

Use a brow brush when you’re done to groom the brows. Check for any missed spots and remove any missed hairs. When you’re happy with the result, apply a cooling aloe gel or use a Flawless Ice Roller to gently massage the skin around the brows. This will help soothe the skin and minimise redness.

BEST BROW TIPS & ADVICE

No matter how careful you are when doing your brows, mistakes can always happen. Or perhaps you’d like fuller brows and don’t know how to get them? Check out these tips and tricks that can help you achieve the best brows:

  • Use a pencil to correct mishaps: Have you exaggerated with plucking? You need not worry. Getting fuller brows is easy, just use a brow pencil or pen of the same colour as your brows to fill in the overplucked spots. Use feather-like strokes to achieve a natural look and define your brows’ shape.
  • Taming your brows: If you have bushier brows, but wish to tame them, do so by carefully trimming any hairs that stick out. Brush brows upward with a spoolie or brow brush, then define the shape with your eyebrow pencil. Lastly use a clear brow gel to fix your brows in place.
  • Avoid too pointy arches: Pointy arches aren’t natural and will only make you look angry or confused. If you want to add some dimension to the arch when you do your eyebrows, use a brow pencil to fill in the upper portion of the arch, but don’t overdo it.
  • Always blend in your product: After you’ve applied any type of filler (pencil or gel), use a brow brush to blend in the product and make it look natural. If you don’t blend it entirely, it will look harsh and unnatural.

Doing your eyebrows isn’t hard, but there are a few rules to follow if you want to achieve perfection. So, what do you say? Have you ever done your brows yourself, or would you rather go to a beautician? Now that you know how to do your eyebrow, learn how to remove hair from other areas of your face in this article.
