Mother’s Day 2021 – How to Celebrate In Lockdown

If a year of restrictions and lockdowns have taught us anything, it certainly is that we must make the best of any situation, such as taking every opportunity to celebrate love and our loved ones. And what better way than to celebrate the purest form of devotion than with a special Mother’s Day 2021? Whether you want to plan a surprise for your mum or show your partner gratitude for her efforts to raise and educate the kids, let these awesome ideas inspire you.

Start Mum’s day off the right way with a tasty breakfast in bed.

1. SURPRISE HER WITH BREAKFAST IN BED

Mums are those special creatures who wake up early and prepare breakfast every morning. But how many times did you make breakfast for your mum or partner? Chances are, not often enough. So, why don’t you surprise her this mother’s day with her favourite breakfast delivered straight between the sheets? If you live together, wake up before she does and make her some heart-shaped toast with a cuppa, or even a full-cooked breakfast if you will. If you don’t live together, an early breakfast delivery will surely give her the right start of the day.

2. SEND YOUR MUM SOME FLOWERS

Nothing says ‘I love you Mum’ like flowers and a gift!

Flowers are the easiest way to brighten someone’s day, especially when that someone is your mum. Many flower delivery services create special mother’s day bouquets, or you could let your imagination run wild and order a bespoke bouquet with her favourite blooms. Besides sending flowers to your mum, you can also have a bouquet delivered at home for your partner, from you and the kids.

3. HAVE BRUNCH TOGETHER – AT HOME OR VIRTUALLY

Not everyone’s an early bird, so if breakfast sounds too early for a festive day, spoil her with brunch instead. For Mother’s Day 2021, set up a home café in your living room and surprise your mum with a posh brunch consisting of finger foods, a selection of sandwiches, fruit juice and a glass of sparkling wine. Alternatively, have everything delivered to your mum and enjoy a virtual brunch together via Zoom or Skype.

4. THROW A SPECIAL MOTHER’S DAY 2021 COCKTAIL NIGHT

Parties and cocktails go hand in hand, but you don’t have to go to the pub to enjoy a drink. This mother’s day, set up a home bar and make a special cocktail for your mum or partner. Use berries and edible flowers to create fancy ice cubes (place the flowers or berries in the ice cube tray, fill with water, and freeze as you’d normally do to make ice cubes). Use these ice cubes to decorate the cocktails and give a festive touch to your night.

5. POST-IT NOTES TREASURE HUNT

We may have to deal with the lockdown, but you can still order your mum a nice gift or organise a treasure hunt if you live together. Hide the gift somewhere in your home and write down hints for her to follow as well as reasons why you love her. You can also include other small surprises along the way, such as framed photos of your best moments, pictures with you as a child or the grandchildren, a CD with meaningful songs, and so on, for a heart melting surprise.

6. THROW AN AFTERNOON TEA PARTY

There is hardly anything more festive than a tea party to celebrate Mother’s Day 2021. Trays of cake, pastries, and sandwiches, delicious tea, and a glass of sparkling wine or a mimosa cocktail can brighten even the darkest day. If you don’t live together, a lovely idea is to bake some cakes and pastries yourself and send them to your mum. Why not bake some chocolaty brownies?

If baking is not your forte, you could always order takeout – supporting a local business by ordering from her favourite restaurant is always nice! That said, your mum will likely appreciate something that you’ve made yourself much more, especially during these times that keep us apart from our loved ones.

7. HOME SPA DAY

Pampering your mother or partner with an all-inclusive spa day – these amazing gifts will help! – can also turn the celebration into a day to remember. To go all fancy, turn the bathroom into a spa with colourful candles and bath bombs. If you only have a shower in your home, a facial treatment and a pedicure are excellent alternatives. If you cannot visit your Mum due to restrictions, why not do it virtually? Just order some goodies to be dropped to your Mum’s home, ready for her to use?

8. CINEMA NIGHT WITH HER FAVOURITE FILM

Thanks to modern technology, watching films together doesn’t mean we have to be under the same roof anymore. There are many desktop and mobile apps that allow you to watch a film together and communicate with one another via chats or even video calls. This solution is ideal if you can’t meet your mum on this special day, giving you a way to spend quality time together even from a distance.

9. DO SOME BAKING TOGETHER

Baking is one of the loveliest ways to spend quality time with your mum and remember sweet memories from your childhood. Even if you don’t live together, you can set up a virtual baking session. Pick either your mum’s favourite recipe or something your mum used to bake for you when you were a kid. A Zoom or Skype meeting can help you bake together, and when you’re done you can enjoy the fruits of your labour together.

10. SET UP A PICNIC

Despite the lockdown, you can still leave your house for recreation purposes, such as having a picnic in a park. If you don’t live with your mum, you can invite her on a one-on-one picnic – even if you have to comply with the social distancing rules, you can still share a meal and spend some time together. Alternatively, if you live together, you can have a picnic with all members of your family living in the same household. Just remember that you can’t go too far from your local area and that you should minimise the time spent outdoors.

11. GO ON A (SOCIALLY DISTANCED) WALK OR HIKE FOR MOTHER’S DAY 2021

The same picnic rules also apply to walks or hikes, either socially distanced if you live in different households or together if you live together. Such activity can break the routine and make this Mother’s Day memorable.

Now, it’s down to you. Just pick your favourite idea to celebrate in style. So, what will it be? How do you plan to celebrate Mother’s Day 2021?
